What is the CRS?

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is the points-based framework IRCC uses to rank all candidates in the Express Entry pool. Scores range from 0 to 1,200 points. At each draw, IRCC invites all candidates whose CRS score meets or exceeds the cutoff threshold to apply for permanent residence.

Your CRS score is automatically calculated by IRCC's system when you create your Express Entry profile. Understanding each scoring section helps you identify where you can maximize your points and whether you have untapped potential.

Section A — Core Human Capital Factors

These are the foundational factors scored on an individual basis. Without a spouse or partner, the maximum is 500 points; with a spouse in your application, some maximums are slightly reduced because your spouse contributes additional points in Section B.

CRS Improvement Strategies

  • Maximize language scores — Retake IELTS/CELPIP/TEF if you scored below CLB 9 or 10. Each CLB band improvement is worth 6–13 points per ability (up to 52 points total from one band increase across all four abilities).
  • Apply to a Provincial Nominee Program — A provincial nomination adds 600 guaranteed points, placing you above every general draw cutoff. Explore enhanced PNP streams aligned with your occupation and province.
  • Gain more Canadian work experience — Each additional year of qualifying Canadian experience adds points both in Section A and potentially in skills transferability.
  • Complete Canadian education — A 2+ year Canadian diploma or degree adds 30 bonus points in Section D plus improves your skills transferability score.
  • Include your spouse's factors — If your spouse has strong education, language scores, or Canadian work experience, including them can add significant Section B points.
  • Pursue a Canadian job offer — A valid LMIA-backed or exempt job offer in NOC TEER 0 or 1 adds 50–200 CRS points.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the draw type. General draws (open to FSWP, FSTP, CEC) have historically had cutoffs between 470 and 540 points. CEC-only draws and category-based draws (healthcare, trades, French language proficiency, STEM, agriculture) are often significantly lower — sometimes below 400. There is no fixed target. The cutoff changes with every draw based on the pool composition. Check our Draw History for the most recent data.

Every draw has its own cutoff score, which IRCC determines based on the number of ITAs being issued and the CRS distribution of the pool. Scores fluctuate draw-to-draw. Large draws tend to have lower cutoffs; draws with fewer ITAs tend to have higher cutoffs. Over time, the pool composition shifts — which is why monitoring draw history is important for setting realistic expectations.

Yes. Language test results (IELTS, CELPIP, TEF, TCF) are only valid for two years from the date of the test — not the date of the result. If your test results expire while your Express Entry profile is active, IRCC will remove those language scores from your profile, which will significantly reduce your CRS score. You must book and retake the test before results expire. Your RCIC will help you track expiry dates.
