Who Needs a Study Permit?

You need a study permit if you are studying at a DLI in a program that is longer than 6 months. You do not need a study permit for courses or programs 6 months or shorter, though you still need a valid visitor visa or eTA to enter Canada.

DLI Requirement: You can only study in Canada with a study permit if your institution is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Check the DLI list at canada.ca before accepting your offer of admission.

Work Rights for Study Permit Holders

Extending Your Study Permit

Apply to extend your study permit at least 30 days before it expires. File online through IRCC's portal. If you apply before expiry, you maintain "maintained status" and may continue studying while the extension is processed. The extension fee is $150.

After You Graduate — PGWP

Within 180 days of receiving your final marks (transcripts or graduation letter), apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). The PGWP length corresponds to your program length, up to a maximum of 3 years. You cannot apply for PGWP if you worked off-campus without authorisation at any point during your studies.
